The Brazilian Federal Universities are currently undergoing their worst crisis. These institutions are responsible for 90% of the national scientific production and human capital development in the most varied areas. Fernando Henrique Cardoso's privatization policy has reached public Universities with drastic reductions in the number of postgraduate grants and in the investments in science an technology. These calamitous working conditions, combined with the low salaries (which have not raised for the past 3 years, in spite of a 50% inflation rate), have induced lectures/professors to abandonm their carreers or to retire (around 8 thousand within the past 4 years).
This scenario led lectures/professors and students of the Federal Universities to strike for better salaries and investments in education and science. Despite the strong national and international support, the Brazilian Government refuses to negotiate with us. For all the above, we invite you to take part on the First Cyber Rally in defense of the Brazilian Federal Universities.
